Rooftop Housing Group is proud to support Rural Housing Week 2025, taking place from July 7 to 11, as part of a national effort to raise awareness of the critical need for affordable housing in rural areas.
As a housing association serving rural communities, we know the importance of affordable housing for the future development of rural areas. Our latest development in Fladbury, Worcestershire, is a good example of what’s possible when we work together with local communities and organisations to keep our rural communities connected and thriving.
Broadway Lane, Fladbury – a real example that makes things better
Fladbury is a traditional English village situated in rural Worcestershire, approximately five miles away from Pershore and Evesham, with a population of under 1,000 people.
Our latest Broadway Lane development in Fladbury will deliver 34 affordable homes this year. Building on a rural exception site, the development was designed to meet the diverse local needs and addressing a local shortfall in the provision of affordable housing.
The development includes 21 homes for social rent and 13 homes for shared ownership in a mix of one-bed flats, one- to two-bed bungalows, and two- to three-bed houses, helping young people to move out of the family home, supporting downsizers to stay local or giving families space to grow.
All properties include solar panels and electric vehicle charging points. For customers with limited mobility, we’ve designed wet-room shower rooms in all bungalows and low-profile shower trays on ground-floor flats to support their independent living.
Nearly half of the site has been allocated as Public Open Space, including a rainwater infiltration basin to support biodiversity and reduce flood risk.
Homes will be allocated based on local connections to help keep communities together.
In addition, financial contributions will be made for the provision of education facilities, school transport, community transport, and public open space.
Do the right thing with the right support
Delivering affordable rural housing isn’t easy. Land availability, planning restrictions and high development costs are all barriers.
Rural developments like Fladbury can only happen with the right national support.
We welcome the Government’s long-term housing strategy and its commitment by pledging £39 billion over 10 years for affordable housing with dedicated investment for rural areas. The policy enables organisations like Rooftop to plan, invest sustainably and make the most of every opportunity to build in rural communities.
As we mark Rural Housing Week 2025, Rooftop reaffirms our commitment to building good-quality homes and being a reliable landlord, making rural living affordable, inclusive and sustainable. We will work together with our partners and the communities and provide safe and secure homes for our customers.
