Tomorrow is Armed Forces Day (Saturday, 28 June) – an important day that brings people across the country together to show their support for the UK’s Armed Forces community. This includes regular service personnel, veterans, reservists, cadets and their families.
This year is extra special as we also remember the 80th anniversary of VE Day, with many events happening throughout June.
Why It Matters
The UK Armed Forces do important work around the world – helping in disaster zones, tackling terrorism, keeping us safe, and much more. Even the smallest gesture of support can mean a lot to those who serve, and to their families.
How We Show Our Support
At Rooftop, we’re proud to be a member of the Armed Forces Covenant, and we’re committed to supporting the Armed Forces community in a range of meaningful ways:
- Working with local authority partners and other agencies to provide accommodation for veterans who are homeless
- Supporting customers with a military background by providing help with money management and accessing benefits, and signposting to specialist support services
- Encouraging customers to disclose military service history and keeping accurate records to ensure we have a good understanding of what support they may need
- Taking part in meetings to speak up for veterans in our communities
- Sharing information about local Armed Forces events
- Adding the Covenant logo to our job ads and website to show we’re a Forces-friendly employer
- Offering volunteer leave to colleagues for cadet activities, reservists or cadet adult instructors
Last year, our colleagues proudly supported the Armed Forces community in a variety of ways; from observing two-minute silences on Remembrance Day and VE Day, to holding special VE celebration events at our schemes, as well as creating a giant poppy window display filled with messages of support for veterans and those still serving. We also helped raise over £1,000 through a sponsored walk for Stepway, a local charity supporting veterans in Worcestershire.
