Preparation for independence
Providing young people with the skills to help them live independently.

What is Preparation for Independence?
Preparation for Independence (PFI) is a programme undertaken by all residents to build a 360 skill set that provides each young person with the ability to live independently. Many of the young people who secure a place within Young People Service have not been able to experience an environment that provides this learning.
The programme we have developed focus’ on the ‘bigger picture’ of the young persons' aims & goals for their future. Then we use the time in the programme to provide those foundation building blocks for that successful journey.
What is covered in the programme?
There are 5 main sections covered on the Preparation for Independence programme:
- Stay Safe
- Economic Wellbeing
- Making a positive contribution
- Enjoy and achieve
- Be Healthy
These are tailored to the needs of the young person and used to highlight any existing achievements to celebrate their progress.

Preparation for Independence Training
The Preparation for Independence (PFI) scheme is taught through a diverse range of channels including Support and link workers, peer support training and online digital courses.
As each young person passes through each key stage they create a record of achievement which is recognised by the organisation and several partners as proof that the client has reached a high standard and shows the skills required to manage their life and tenancy successfully.
Working with partners
We want to ensure that everyone who progresses through our Young Persons Service and the Preparation for Independence scheme has all the skills that they need to succeed once they are living independently.
To help provide our customers with every chance of success we work closely with many other organisations to help provide support, education and career opportunities.
